OBJECTIVES:
University Core of Common Studies (UCCS) objectives.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the mathematical sciences in describing the
world.
Analyze quantitative information symbolically, graphically, numerically, and
verbally for the purpose of solving problems or drawing conclusions.
Construct logical arguments in support of mathematical assertions.
Course objectives.
Understand the concept of a function and change in applied contexts.
Interpret, represent, and connect the concepts of calculus to real world
applications, by numerically, graphically, analytically, and verbally
demonstrating ideas and skills.
Exhibit the ability to perform the basic symbol manipulation skills of
calculus.
Understand the concept of limits, derivatives and definite integrals, and
demonstrate knowledge by performing necessary computations or solve problems.
Appreciate the power of mathematics and how it relates to the world.
CLASS PLACE AND TIME: CU 001, MWF 11
INSTRUCTOR: Wim Ruitenburg
OFFICE HOURS: By appointment (people can stop me in the halls too, and
see whether I have time to answer a question). Office CU 384
HELPDESK: Third floor CU, stop by without need for an appointment.
PREREQUISITES: MATH 1101 or equivalent.
Equivalent is three to four years of college preparatory mathematics including
topics listed in description of MATH 1101.
BOOK: Hughes-Hallett et al, Calculus, Single and Multivariable, 8th
Edition (usually loose leaf LL or e-book)
CALCULATOR: Limited in-class demonstrations use the TI-Nspire CX CAS.
Students are expected to have a calculator with CAS ability.
SOFTWARE ACCESS: Wiley Plus (you only have to purchase this ONCE during
the whole calculus sequence).
The link towards student access appears to start
here.
GRADES will be determined by performance on exams and on homework
problems.
There will be three exams: EX1, EX2, and EX3.
Each exam is worth 10 points.
Final score: We add the top two scores, plus half of the lowest score.
Example: Someone has scored 9, 5, 7. Then the final score from the three exams
is 9 + 2.5 + 7 = 18.5.
In case of inclement weather during finals week, the final EX3 will be canceled
and grades calculated on the basis of the coursework the student has completed
up to the cancellation.
There will be quiz problems, about once a week.
Participation is required.
The up to 5 grade points from the quiz section will be used to adjust the final
grade.
Participation in Wiley Plus earns 4 further points.
In what way will be determined by how well this internet package works with the
course.
Points to grade conversion.
