A brief informal description of the 17 Oct 1997 Linux installation attempt. More than 20 people were present, including several officers and members of the Marquette Computer Society. We started at 1 PM. We had brought two linux boxes into the room. We plugged our new machine of last week, still called guest, into the Net and hooked its monitor signal to the big screen. The other machine was the original warrior, which we plugged into the Net to the side of the room. Aryashree Barik managed the console of guest. Next we let the machines `ping' one another, while unplugging and replugging the Net connections to show that the two machines referenced one another's network cards. We unplugged one machine, and ran netconfig on both. With netconfig we can change the Net identity of the machines. We made the new machine into warrior, and the old one into guest. We plugged both machines into the Net, and rebooted. Behold! The machines had swapped identity. Finally we tried to install the X window system. We ran XF86Setup. First initialize the mouse. This was a delicate operation, since we are not allowed to touch the mouse at this stage. After several attempts we were done. As screen resolution we chose VGA, which is an almost universally available option on all monitors. Then type startx, and voila. We ran X, be it in low resolution. I think we were done before 3 PM.
