OBJECTIVES:
Relate the mathematics of your university courses in geometry and calculus to
the basic concepts of HS mathematics.
For example:
(1) See the basic concepts from a broader point of view.
(2) Be able to answer difficult HS questions with confidence.
(3) Have alternate ways to look at fundamentals.
(4) Be able to decide which topics to emphasize.
CLASS PLACE AND TIME: CU 126, TuTh 5-6:30.
INSTRUCTOR: Wim Ruitenburg.
OFFICE HOURS: Shortly after class, or by appointment. Office CU 384.
PREREQUISITES 4030: MATH 4420 and six additional hours of upper
division MATH courses and consent of department chair.
PREREQUISITES 5030: None clearly posted in the Graduate Bulletin.
BOOK: Usiskin, Peressini, Marchisotto, Stanley: Mathematics for High
School Teachers.

Chapter 2.
Chapter 3.
Parts of chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10.
Additional topics from calculus.
GRADES will be determined by performance on exams and on homework
problems.
There will be three exams: EX1, EX2, and EX3.
Each exam is worth 10 points.
There will be homework problems worth extra points.
Some homeworks will be small, occasionally one will be large.
All homework combined is estimated to be worth 15 points.
In case of inclement weather during finals week, the final EX3 will be
canceled and grades calculated on the basis of the coursework the student has
completed up to the cancellation.
