Bio Sketch for Grants

Dr. Praveen Madiraju is a Professor of Computer Science at Marquette University and directs the Data Science and Text Analytics (DATA) Lab. He has been working in data science and text analytics area for the last six years, and has been involved in setting up, maintaining, developing applications, and conducting research in the general area of databases for over a decade. He was invited to consult as a visiting researcher on data science, databases, and natural language processing at corporate partners. In a current project (funded by Northwestern Mutual), he is developing methods to extract mentions of patient’s diseases from clinical text and map them to a disease taxonomy using NLP techniques. He recently led as the PI from Marquette on an MCW Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) pilot grant in predicting opioid overdose readmission and OUD using machine learning techniques on EHR data. He is also the NSF REU Site PI on Data Science Across Disciplines. He has experience leading students in using machine learning techniques such as decision trees, logistic regression to predict long-term crisis events for veterans using early warning signs and acute crisis events.

Bio for Talks

Dr. Praveen Madiraju is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, USA. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Georgia State University. He directs the Data Science and Text Analytics Lab. The DATA Lab focuses on solving real-world problems by applying techniques from the broad area of data science and data analytics on both structured and unstructured data. The lab also conducts research on applying machine learning techniques to analyze textual and social media data.He is also the Graduate Program Chair for Computer Science program at Marquette.

His research is in the areas of Data Science, Healthcare Informatics, Text Analytics, and Databases. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and has organized workshops on Middleware Systems in conjunction with ACM SAC and IEEE COMPSAC. He regularly serves on NSF Panels.
