Wim Ruitenburg's Fall 2007 MATH025.1001 Syllabus
OBJECTIVES: Recognize precise and correct reasoning. Have an overview of
the development of mathematical ideas.
As core course outcomes we also have:
1. Evaluate the effectiveness of the mathematical sciences in describing the
world.
2. Analyze quantitative information symbolically, graphically, numerically, and
verbally for the purpose of solving problems or drawing conclusions.
3. Construct logical arguments in support of mathematical assertions

PREREQUISITES: Two years of college preparatory mathematics
BOOK: Edward B. Burger and Michael Starbird, The Heart of Mathematics,
second edition. Key College Publishing, 2005
GRADES will be determined by performance on exams and on homework
problems
There will be 4 exams: EX1, EX2, EX3 and EX4.
Each exam is worth 10 points.
There will be homework and projects. Participation is required.
Total homework plus projects is worth 20 points.
There may be about 4 in-class points
Points to grade conversion.
